A white Hyundai Sonata from the side, its windows tinted as California allows: a strip along the top of the windshield (1), clear front side windows (2), dark rear side windows (3) and a dark back window (4)

California, window by window

  • Any shade: the rear side windows, and the back window when the car has outside mirrors on both sides.
  • Clear, colorless UV film only: the front side windows.
  • A strip across the top only: the windshield, kept above a line 29 inches over the driver’s seat.
California window tint rules, window by window
WindowThe ruleIn plain words
WindshieldFilm only in a top strip whose bottom edge sits at least 29 inches above the driver's seat (§26708(c)). Not red or amber, no solid lettering, no extra glare.A sun strip up top is fine; the rest stays clear.
Front side windowsNo tint. Clear, colorless UV film only: at least 88% light through the film, 70% or more through glass plus film, installer's certificate in the car (§26708(d)).Front doors stay clear. Clear UV film is fine; any shade is not.
Rear side windowsAny darkness (§26708(b)(4)). No red, blue or amber film (§26701(d)).As dark as you like, 5% included.
Back windowAny darkness with outside mirrors on both sides showing at least 200 feet behind (§26708(b)(8)). No red, blue or amber film.Dark is fine with both side mirrors.

What California's 70% tint rule really means

Tint is rated by how much visible light gets through: 70% lets most light in; 5% is very dark. California's 70% covers glass and film together, and factory glass already blocks some light. Federal standards only require front windows to pass 70% to begin with.

So front-door film must pass at least 88% of light by itself, be clear, colorless and made to block UVA rays, and leave the window at 70% or more. As the CHP puts it, any tinting, however light, is illegal on the front side windows.

The windshield strip

California doesn't measure the strip in inches from the top. Its bottom edge must sit at least 29 inches above the empty driver's seat, measured 5 inches in front of the bottom of the seatback, with the seat all the way back and down and the car on level ground. So depth varies by car.

It can't be red or amber, carry solid lettering or reflect more glare than bare glass.

Rear windows, mirrors and colors

Behind the driver, California sets no darkness limit: rear side windows can take any shade, and so can the back window if the car has outside mirrors on both sides, each showing at least 200 feet behind.

Red, blue and amber film is banned on every window. Glare limits cover the windshield strip and medical screens (35% reflective at most), and front-door film must be clear, ruling out mirror finishes there.

Medical exemptions

There are two routes. A signed letter from a licensed physician and surgeon or a licensed optometrist lets the driver or front passenger who needs shade use removable sun screens on the front side windows. See-through ones must be green, gray or neutral smoke passing at least 35% of light, and none may be used from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, or in poor visibility. The CHP says permanent film doesn't qualify.

A licensed dermatologist's certificate saying you shouldn't be exposed to UV rays allows clear, colorless film passing at least 88% of light on any window, if glass and film together still pass 70%. To get either, ask your doctor for the signed letter or certificate and keep it with you; no DMV permit is needed.

Headlight and taillight film

California bars any grille, clear lens cover or other obstruction in front of a headlight lens on cars made and first registered here after Jan. 1, 1968; the CHP treats aftermarket add-ons there as unlawful and says headlights must shine white. Tinted headlight film isn't street-legal.

Taillights must glow red and be plainly visible from 1,000 feet on cars built after Jan. 1, 1969; brake lights, from 300 feet, day and night. The CHP treats see-through covers over the lens that dim them or change their color as unlawful unless the lamps clearly still comply.

If you're pulled over

Tint is an equipment rule, and a violation is an infraction. The law generally lets you sign a promise to correct it, often called a fix-it ticket, then show proof of the fix by the notice's deadline, no more than 30 days out.

The officer can skip that for evidence of fraud or persistent neglect, an immediate safety hazard, or if you won't or can't fix it promptly.

How Tint Monsters helps

Before we cut any film, we check your shade against California's rules for each window, and we'll tell you what's legal before anything is fitted. Questions about a medical exemption? Bring the paperwork to our Menifee or Norco shop.

This is a plain-English summary of California law as checked in October 2026, not legal advice; check the current Vehicle Code or ask the CHP or DMV.

They did a awesome job, i got heat prevention all around, and all my windows tinted. Yes also the windshield. The guy was real friendly, i didnt have a ride back to the house and i didnt want to uber home, so i came prepared to wait the whole 3 hours, he kept me uo to date on the eta, and also told me i can relax and watch the tv if i wanted. I had my switch, so i just played smash bros while i waited and walked to the gas station near by.

I recently took my new Ford Maverick in for window tinting and had an incredible experience. The owner really took the time to explain the technical differences between the various grades of film. What really sold me was the heat lamp demonstration—he showed the actual UV protection and heat rejection of each grade in real-time. We were originally planning on a lower-grade tint, but seeing that demo made it a no-brainer to opt for the higher-grade protection. The installation is flawless, the truck looks awesome, and it is already making a huge difference in the heat. If you want a pro who actually educates his customers, this is the place!

Went in for a windshield repair for a significant rock strike that immediately spiderwebbed to an inch across, that was in a difficult area towards the corner of my windshield. What I admired most was the 100% honest disclaimer this would not likely be a full repair but a repair meant to stop further progression. I have had many rock strikes and windshield replacements over the years and I knew a full repair was unlikely. The repair was done quickly and at a very fair price. The repair was much more complete than I expected. Highly recommended and will return.

Questions

Questions about tint law in California

See all our FAQs
How dark can I tint my windows in California?

In California, the front side windows can only take clear UV film, which still cuts heat, and the rear side windows and back window can take any shade. We check the law for your car before we start.

What tint shades can I choose from?

From darkest to lightest: 5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, 50% and 70%. Darker shades give more privacy, lighter ones keep a factory look, and we make sure the front windows stay legal.

When can I roll my windows down after tinting?

Keep them up for 3 to 5 days while the film dries, and wait a week before cleaning the inside of the glass. Use a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.

How much does car window tinting cost?

Car window tinting usually costs from $200 to $800. The price depends on your vehicle and the film you choose.

How long does car window tinting take?

Most cars take 2 to 4 hours. Taking off old tint first can add an hour or two.

Is ceramic tint worth it?

Yes, if heat matters to you. Ceramic film keeps more heat out without having to look darker: Union Ceramic IR blocks up to 87% of infrared heat, against 75% for Union Carbon IR.
